Labyrinth Seals: Getting Lost in the Maze

In countless books and movies, we see our hero frantically scouring a labyrinth to hopefully reach their ultimate goal. Whether it be the exit, some sort of invaluable treasure at the center, or any other worthy goal – the labyrinth is not something to be taken lightly.

You might not realize it, but you benefit from labyrinths quite a bit. Your car, the machinery that manufacturers many of the products you rely on, and much more is kept running smoothly by little components known as bearings. Should dirt or other contaminants reach the bearing, chances are the performance of the machine will slowly deteriorate, making it less efficient, powerful, and fast. Preventing that contamination from reaching the heart of many bearings is the labyrinth seal. Except in this case, the hero is the bearing and the labyrinth is its trusty protector against conniving contaminants.

These seals are used in a number of high precision applications to keep machine components clean and working properly in even the harshest operating conditions. But what exactly is it? mechanical seal factory

A labyrinth seal is one specific variety of mechanical seal that is engineered to make it extremely difficult for contaminants like water and debris to reach the vital component of the bearing. Without the seal in place, the bearing would be susceptible to early failure, poor performance, and unnecessary damage.

Typically, these seals are comprised of many grooves and tracks that fit tightly with the bearing. This unique construction makes it extremely difficult for fluids and other contaminants to reach the actual bearing. Instead of penetrating the potentially delicate bearing, contaminants are trapped indefinitely in the many grooves and pathways of the labyrinth.

For some labyrinth seals, especially for those intended for a rotating shaft, a small clearance is placed between the threads to allow for rotation. While this does indeed provide a path for fluid and contamination, the seal design provides non-contact sealing by controlling the fluids and contaminants so they are directed away from the bearing. With this design, the fluids are forced not only through grooved passages and chambers, but they are also directed outward through the centrifugal forces created by the rotating shaft. Ultimately, this provides multiple methods of protecting the bearing from contamination.

Additionally, many applications make use of these specific seals not only when harsh environments come into play, but also when high RPM’s are required. This is because labyrinth seals significantly cut down on friction and have an extremely long life.
